A rare late 19th century Anglo – Indian unmarked silver standing cup, presumably Nasik, dated 1871

The front with a shield shape cartouche engraved with a presentation inscription reading “Given by Royal Bombay Golf Club won by Major Stanley Scott at Nasik September 1871”. The foot with chased decoration of foliate scrolls and flower heads. The bowl with a removable liner, held underneath by a nut.

Height – 19.4 cm / 7.6 inches

Weight – 572 grams / 18.39 ozt

This rare trophy cup of early date demonstrates a style of workmanship unlike the other better known regional styles, Nasik or Nashik being close to Bombay as well a Poona. Given that this is the only known example with an inscription relating to Nasik it can only be assumed that it was produced locally or that this represents a previously unknown earlier style for Bombay or Poona. The presence of a double lined interior is a sophisticated feature consistent with the high level of workmanship found throughout.

The Royal Bombay Golf Club, now defunct, was founded in 1842. In 1889 Royal Western India Golf Club was founded in Nashik. These two courses along with Calcutta founded in 1829 are the only three golf courses granted Royal status in India, and the latter is the oldest founded outside of England and Scotland.
