Group of letters, poems and a manuscript book from historian Charles Merivale, one letter reading in part “…What kind of climate have you found the weather?... The fish, the figs, the grapes, the Gidian wine […] are they giant as fine as modern travellers have suspected? – Inform us are you joyous and contented?”; one poem titled ‘Ode 1. 14.’, reads in part “Another wave will sweep thee down the tide/ Keep close to fort and safely ride/ Jest not, O beaten bark/ Thy mast is splitten with the stormy gale,..”; another reads in Latin “abstu lit occiduo luccem cum sole minorem/ Hesperus et coelo illabens humentibud alis/ Stansit lumi pressas gelito sidcre nubes…”; one manuscript notebook contains translations from Ovid and other poems in English, Latin and Ancient Greek; another journal contains maths equations, c.1823-1828 (small quantity)
