'A MARITIME SCENE' c.1750
A fine series depicting many ships leaving port for the open waters. A set of 6 copper engraved card-backed, cut away sheets combining to create an early peep show, [105×142 mm] with original hand-colouring;

The cut aways depict; [1] a quay with tall walls, on one side two men are looking at the ships, on the other side a man sitting on a barrell is smoking a pipe; [2] a cliff on the right and a sailing ship on the left frame the scene, a boat with four men is moving towards the open waters; [3] galleons with flags sailing on the rough sea, a cloudy sky suggests a tempest is coming; [4] a similiar scene further in depth, showing cliffs on both sides and a fort on top of it; [5] another similar scene with two sailing ship on the open waters; [6] a long distance seascape, showing a group of many ships in the centre of the scene.
