A rare early 20th century Iraqi silver twin handled tray, Baghdad circa 1930 by Shuwa’ Jangana & Bros
Of oval form with a scalloped cavetto edge, cast and chased acanthus type scroll handled riveted to edge. The field with a flat chased six-sided star to the centre reserved with peonies and foliage in a circular cartouche, the outer section with vases of flowers attended to by two nightingales. The broad edge engine turned with an interlaced pattern. Makes mark to the centre of field.

Shuwa’ Jangana & Bros were the principle Jewish silversmithing firm in Baghdad in the 1920’s and 30’s. Similarly decorated trays by this maker and overs are illustrated in History of Iraqi Silver (2017) by Mohammed Al Baghdadi.
