A rare early 19th century Indian colonial silver twin handled tray, Madras circa 1825 by Peter Cachart (d. 1831)
Of rectangular form with rounded corners, a cavetto edge with a gadrooned rim cornered with double scallop shell with acanthus scroll corners quartered with rocaille motifs. The cast twin handles formed as stylised fruiting vine with reeded acanthus scroll sides. The otherwise plain field with an engraved rectangular form cartouche of interlocking ellipses with crescents reserved with a prick dotted ground. Makers mark PC to the reverse only.

In the 1820’s Cachart had a shop on Popham’s Broadway opposite that of Robert Gordon’s, after his death in 1831 he was succeeded in business by his son Joseph Cachart.
