Full particulars of the life, trial, and awful execution, of Mr. & Mrs. Manning, woodcut broadside, with illustration and decorative border, some reinforcements verso along two central fold marks, some staining, 500 x 375mm, printed by George Tayleur, Manchester, 1849.
*** The case known as the ‘Bermondsey Horror’ involved the murder of Mrs Manning’s lover, who was buried under the kitchen floor. Charles Dickens attended the public execution, and wrote: "I believe that a sight so inconceivably awful as the wickedness and levity of the immense crowd collected at that execution this morning could be imagined by no man, and could be presented in no heathen land under the sun." He later used Manning as the basis for one of his characters in Bleak House, Mademoiselle Hortense.
