This cognac from Remy Martin was first created in 1874 and is a blend of up to 1,200 grapes eaux-de-vie from Grande Champagne, the first cru of the Cognac region. Individual distillations - varying from 40 years to 100 years old - are matured in ancient oak barrels, before being mixed by a Master Blender, who is referred to as a maître de chai in the Cognac world.
Louis XIII is bottled in Baccarat crystal decanters that are replicas of a 16th century metal flask discovered at the site of the battle of Jarnac. Each decanter is individually numbered and housed in a red presentation case, along with a Baccarat glass stopper and a red certificate book.
This Cognac was served to King George VI and Queen Elizabeth at the Royal Banquet at the Château de Versailles in 1938, on the occasion of their first State Visit to another country after they became King and Queen Consort. It was served again on Queen Elizabeth II's visit to France in 1957.
According to a Sept 2021 Forbes article, Remy Martin's flagship Cognac is 'widely considered the greatest, most complex expression of Cognac available today'.
