A GREY SCHIST RELIEF WITH BUDDHIST MONKS CARRYING WATER FLASKS
PROPERTY FROM THE MOITA COLLECTION OF GANDHARA ART
Ancient region of Gandhara, 2nd - 3rd century

Of rectangular shape, deeply carved, depicting seven standing male figures, most likley Buddhist monks or Brahmanical figures, all dressed in a similar attire with heavy multi-folded gowns, and carrying small globular water flasks, mounted on a later wooden platform, 19cm x 49.5cm excluding the base.

Reliefs with this scene are usually to be found on a stupa's base. A similar example can be seen in Isao Kurita's publication, Ancient Buddhist Art Series: Gandharan Art, Part 1 and 2, Japan, 2003, cat. 305.
