A GREY SCHIST CARVED FRIEZE WITH MUSIC AND DANCE SCENES FROM THE LIFE OF SIDDHARTHA
PROPERTY FROM THE MOITA COLLECTION OF GANDHARA ART
Ancient region of Gandhara, 2nd - 3rd century

Of rectangular shape, the frieze divided in two overimposed, horizontal panels with music and dance scenes with drummers, musicians and dancers, the scene animated by great dynamism and movement, possibly referring to the pleasures of the courtly life the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama Shakyamuni, witnessed before renouncing his princely title and lifestyle, framed within bands of decorative fretwork, each panel divided by a Corinthian capital, mounted on a later wooden base, 19.5cm x 37cm excluding the base.
