The Vines of the Veneto
Wine tasting in Chiswick House cellars
A wine tasting like no other – in our very own large brick vaulted cellar – usually off-limits to visitors.
Invite seven of your wine-loving friends for an exclusive tour and guided wine tasting with the ebullient, irrepressible and hugely knowledgeable head of Wine at Chiswick Auctions, Sam Hellyer.
With nearly two decades of sampling and learning about wine, Sam writes: I started working in the wine trade at the age of 18 because I needed to pay for a bus pass to get to a significatly better sixth form in Winchester than the one available in my home town. I was fortunate that the the store was run by a passionate band of misfits who had a tasting table and a budget to open wine for customers each week. I got to sample hundreds of wines, but more importantly I got to talk about them with customers and build up my knowledge by discussing the wines with people from all walks of life and levels of experience. Fast forward another 18 years, my academic career was continually supported by working in the wine trade, and I still believe talking about wines and discussing them is the best way to explore. I enjoy translating their flavours into a language that I can share with others, and trading experiences and knowledge about the greatest art form known to humanity.
Begin the evening with a taste of Chiswick House history. Learn about the ‘Bachelor Duke’s’ famous parties and get in the mood for your own elegant soirée. A short and lively historical tour will whet your appetite for the wines that Sam will then describe and describe.
