TAXIDERMY: CASED COMMON BUZZARD (BUTEO BUTEO), ON WOOD PIGEON (COLUMBA PALUMBUS)

prey kill by W. Shelbrooke of Bridgenorth, Shropshire, circa 1935, both full mounts in original case, with hand painted backdrop and well executed groundwork. Rear of case carries taxidermist trade label which reads ‘W.Shelbrooke, Taxidermist & Furrier, Birds and animals beautifully and artistically mounted, Late with Peter Spicer’s, Leamington’. Label has hand written pencil annotation ‘Shot at Bridgford(?), Nov: 1935’ and customer details of ‘Mr J Bryke(?)’.

Shelbrooke worked for Spicers before setting up on his own, which accounts for the similarity in style and quality of the work.
