A group of letters by prominent 19th century artists, mostly addressed to Doyne C. Bell, Secretary of the Privy Council, comprising: John Bell ("It is a great pleasure to me that you accept the little marble bust of Angelica 'in token of pleasant memories'...I am sorry the marble is not better, and that it is but a sketch, but it is wholly from my own hands", one page, Kensington, 31 May 1875); Joseph E. Bohem ("With greatest pleasure Just returned from Dalmeny, with such a cold!", one page, The Avenue, 76 Fulham Road, 2 December 1879); William Henry Millais ("I have been staying in London with my brother and was startled with his works which are this year magnificent", three pages, The Priory, Faversham, 16 January n.y.); Oswald Walters Brierly (letter confirming his availability to visit the recipient and adding "I presume you still live at the same place in the rear of Buckingham Palace, but I did not know it was 'Lower Grosvenor Place'", one page, 27 April 1885); William Boxall (discussing an engraving the recipient really wishes to have, two pages, 7 June 1876); Augustus Wollaston Franks (giving an opinion on a plate, two pages, British Museum, 25 April 1883); Reginald Stuart Poole (thanking Doyne Bell for the gift of a Testoon of Magdeburg to the British Museum, two pages, British Museum, 12 January 1877); James Fahey (letter to H. Mogford, organiser of an exhibition at the Crystal Palace, asking for an admission ticket for members of his family, one page, Brompton, 29 May 1834); Frederick Leighton (letter to Mrs Lyndoch Gardiner, apologising for not being able to visit her, one page, 8vo, 2 Holland Park, n.d.) and Briton Riviere (informing the recipient he is leaving town for five months and will not undertake animal paintings on his return, one page, 16 Addison Road, 29 May, 1872); all 8vo, in very good condition.
