Yang Jiechang was born in Foshan, Guangdong Province and emigrated to Europe in 1989. He spent time studying Taoism under master Huangtao, which has had a profound influence on his work. Yang's international recognition came with his participation in the exhibition 'Les Magiciens de la Terre' at the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris and China Avant-Garde at the National Art Museum of Art, Beijing. After his emigration to Europe he became fascinated with Romanticism, with its subjective quest for spirituality, love for nature and the search for the obscure and unfinished.

With several distinct phases punctuating his artistic practice over the years, Yang Jiechang has executed abstract ink works, such as in his series 'Hundred Layers of Ink' in which he saturated paper with endless layers of ink to produce imposing, shimmering works, and more recently has explored politically-charged themes combined with Song-style brush work. The interplay between contemporary ideas and classical mediums is a defining feature of Yang Jiechang's work.
