A Wedgwood creamware oval platter from the Duke of Clarence service, circa 1800
Painted and gilt with the Royal Arms flanked by lion and unicorn supporters standing upon banners inscribed 'Nec Temere' 'Nec Timide', within a blue scalloped border edged with gold barbs, the reverse with Wedgewood impressed mark.
Length: 34 cm, width 25 cm.
A platter of this design was found at Forest Hill, Kent, the Royal hunting lodge of the Duke of Clarence, originally built for Henry VIII and later used by Elizabeth I.
The Duke of Clarence (William Henry, 1765-1837) was the third son of George III and later crowned as William IV, succeeding his brother George IV on 26th June 1830.
