Politics and Polemics
Lunch with Peter Oborne at La Trompette
Join Peter Oborne, journalist, writer and broadcaster, for lunch at La Trompette on Devonshire Road and engage in an erudite, considered, informed and doubtless polemical conversation on prime ministers, cabinets, governments and regimes past and present, good, bad and ugly.
Described by author and academic Justin Schlosberg as: a rare voice of honesty and integrity, everything a journalist should be and that precious few are, Peter is a former political correspondent of The Spectator, The Daily Mail and The Daily Telegraph, and is currently political columnist for the magazine Middle East Eye. Twice winner of the Press Awards Columnist of the Year, he has written books on British politics, the Middle East and cricket: his biography of cricketer Basil D'Oliveira won the William Hill Prize for sports writing.
He challenged the rise of fake news and post-truth as early as 2005 in his book The Rise of Political Lying. At the outset a staunch Brexiteer, his position now seems more ambivalent, having called for a complete re-think in 2019. His wife Martine is vicar of St Michael's Chiswick, and he is gung-ho for some lively debate over good food with the highest bidder.
La Trompette has been a magnet for fine cuisine on Devonshire Road since it opened nearly twenty years ago. It has been the recipient of a succession of accolades and awards, reflecting the care, dedication and creativity of the staff. It prides itself in serving some of the best food in London, and is under the same ownership which includes other notable restaurants including Chez Bruce and The Glass House.
