The sitter, Dame Edith Evans (Dame Edith Mary Booth) (1888-1976) was an actress, whose career spanned almost seventy years. She played over 150 characters and achieved great fame when performing in the 1920s, mainly for her interpretation of the plays of Shakespeare. She was also known to have originated several roles for the playwright George Bernard Shaw. Her role of Lady Bracknell in Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest from 1952 was one of her most famous appearances in films.
