Baldwin (Stanley)
Autograph letter signed ('Stanley Baldwin') to a gentleman, evidently a composer, on the blind embossed stationery of the Prime Minister. Baldwin writes, in full, "I accept with pleasure the offer of a box for Sunday evening which you have so kindly made to me and it will be a delight to hear your opera. Your name was a household word at Cambridge when I was there in the eighties", one page, in very good condition, 8vo, 10 Downing Street, Whitehall, 31 August 1923,
Baldwin’s correspondent might have been the Irish composer Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) who was organist of Trinity College, Cambridge (where Baldwin was educated) and in the 1880s was becoming a major figure in the British musical scene.
