Music Interest.-

A collection of letters to Myrta Parnell and her family from Professor Edwin J Hickox, Myrta’s Teacher at Guildford School of Music, one reads in part “ I hope you are keeping up with the piano. It's a little tiring now but you will like it much better later on…”, from her father, two pages, mailing folds, 20 January 1917; another from her father reads in part “I felt I must write and say how delighted I am you are now able “officially” to put ARCM after your name. My congratulations are manifold and my joy is unbounded in the fact that not only have tried but should get this honour…”, one page, mailing folds, 15 September 15 1934; another letter, typed, from her “Uncle Alec” reads in part “Auntie and I are indeed very pleased to hear you have become such a celebrity in the musical world, and congratulate you very heartily on the possession of the Silver Medal…”, signed “Ever your loving Uncle Alec, one page, mailing folds, 15 February 1935; a large collection from Professor Edwin J Hickox includes several postcards on the Royal Academy of Music stationary, one reads “I hope to reach London tonight and I am wondering if you could get to the Guildhall School tomorrow morning at 10 o’clock. It would be a chance of going through more pieces once again. I wouldn’t hunt you about like this if it were not for the exam.”, signed “E.J.H.”, Bradford, 3 December 1931; a letter reads in part “It is a real sorrow to me to hear that the result is only a partial success. I though, +Dr Brockless thought, that you would “go through” as he put it/ I shall be glad if you will let me see the notes when you get them - until they come along it is impossible to guess what was wrong…”, 13 April 1933; and a quantity of others. *** The letters addressed to Myrta K W Parnell and her family and Professor Edwin J Hickox, Myrta’s teacher of pianoforte at Guildford School of Music and also examiner for the Royal College of Music. After two failures Myrta is successful in 1934 RCM becoming ARCM for teaching Pianoforte and is awarded a silver medal by the GSM. Hickox becomes a family friend of the Parnells, keeping in touch after 1934 until his death in 1937.
