A REGENCY MAHOGANY AND INDIAN ROSEWOOD CAMPAIGN SECRETAIRE CHEST

A REGENCY MAHOGANY AND INDIAN ROSEWOOD CAMPAIGN SECRETAIRE CHEST, bearing oval plaque below the escutcheon engraved 'J Laurie', the rectangular top with rounded corners and moulded edge, over a secretaire drawer, fitted with a central drawer, pigeonholes and drawers, and a black faux leather wrighting insert, over two short and three long drawers, all with recessed drop handles in shaped brass fittings, with ivory line inlay, the rounded corners of the chest with reeded detail, over a moulded base, the original feet replaced with pine batons.

Notes: The campaign chest belonged to General John Ramsey Stewart, who was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief of the Scottish armed forces on 15th November 1854. Stewart led his regiment at the Battle of Inkerman in November 1854, where his forces were heavily outnumbered, and at the Siege of Sebastopol in Winter 1854 during the Crimean War. The chest was then inherited by his son Major General Sir Andrew Mitchell Stewart, who served as the Director of Works, 1913-1919, during the Great War.
