Sketchbooks collection of 6 sketchbooks with c. 50 drawings in graphite pencil of landscapes, trees, castles etc., a few signed by the artist, one album with 5 watercolours, unsigned, 2 of the albums with just rough preliminary sketches, contemporary paper wrappers or half leather over marbled boards, 4 albums with the artists, 'book plate' (?) 'H.W.Burgess. No. 134 Sloan Street, Chelsea', oblong folio, [1824-26].

“Henry William Burgess was known for his drawings of trees and landscapes. He was from a well-known family of painters who enjoyed success in the 18th and 19th centuries. His father was the portrait-painter William Burgess (1749–1812), and his grandfather was Thomas Burgess (fl. 1766–1786). His brothers were the painters' John Cart Burgess and Thomas Burgess. His son John-Bagnold Burgess (1830–1897) also became a successful painter."
