Pen, ink and watercolour on paper, the first titled Bridges in the East Valley, Chusan(Zhoushan), signed and inscribed Two Bridges in the East Valley - shows the quantity of water in the valley - also illustrates their unusual water carriage - the loaded boats pass below the bridges - sometimes the boat has to ascend into a higher level - there two vertical capstans work the hawser that passes round the stern of the boat - and she slowly ascends the inclined plane - WR Maxwell RM, the second titled The East Valley, Chusan (Zhoushan), with irrigation chain, signed and inscribed lower left rice laely planted, and in lower margin A view in the East Valley - Chusan - a little way from the east gate - to show the chain irrigators - worked like the treadmill by one or more men. WRM delt July 28 43, the third titled The harbour and valley of Tinghai (Dinghai), on the island of Chusan (Zhoushan), inscribed The harbour; the valley of Tinghai taken from the hills to the eastward - June 1843, each framed and glazed and with an exhibition label to verso
