Indian Colonial interest – An early 19th century Dutch 935 standard silver teapot stand, Amsterdam 1816 by Egidius Adelaar (active 1812-38)

of oval form with a reeded rim, raised upon four fluted splayed feet. The field later engraved with a presentation inscription “Lime Cutting 9th Oct 1886 won by Captain Ulick Browne XII Bengal Cavalry.” Marked underneath with makers mark EA in a lozenge, standard mark, town mark date letter G and retailers mark Lanting.

For George Ulick Browne, 6th Marquess of Sligo (1856-1935) son of Henry Ulick Browne 5th Marquess of Sligo (1831 – 1913) and his wife Catherine Henrietta Dicken (1836-1914) who he married on the 25th Oct 1855 in Bankipore, Bengal, India. she the daughter of Willaim Dicken and Catherine Lamb. She was born 25 Sep 1836 in Balasore, India.

George was captain of the 12th Bengal Cavalry in the Afgan War, 1879-80, being born in India where his father was attached to the Bengal Civil Service and his mother's father was deputy Inspector-General of Hospitals in Bengal. (thence by descent through to Patricia Knatchbull, 2nd Countess Mountbatten of Burma 1924-2017)
