***This book is an account of the Turkish-Venetian wars in Crete from 1644 to 1669. Valiero had fought against the Turks himself at the sea-battle off the Dardenelles in 1646. In 1667 he was elected Provveditore Generale of Corfu, Zakynthos and Cephalonia (Blackmer, p.360).
