In a review of Bernard's exhibition at the Nevill Gallery, Canterbury in 1995, Laura Gascoigne enthused: 'When the card for [Bernard Myers'] May show of Venice at the Nevill Gallery in Canterbury came through the post, my reaction was one of delight and surprise. Here was a Venice which I recognised - a city of dirt, smells, mist and oily water. It struck me that this was Venice as the Venetians see it. The artist had grasped the key to success with a beauty: shield your eyes from the dazzle and go for the real thing. Myers is familiar with painting dirty water, as his Hammersmith studio over looks the Thames. He admits this might give him an advantage...'
