José María Sert y Badía (1874-1945)
STUDIES FOR THE TRIUMPH OF BACCHUS, 1906-1915. A rare group of vintage silver bromide prints (19), each measuring approx. 180 x 130mm, all but one annotated 'CC' in pencil verso. Accompanied by the publication José María Sert: études photographiques, published by Galerie Michèle Chomette, 1988.
This rare group of vintage prints were made as life studies to aid in Sert's commission of the salon of Kent House, home of Sir Saxton Noble, in Knightsbridge, London. At the time of this commission, in the early years of the 20th century, Sert had gained international recognition as a decorative muralist, whose modern Baroque style was increasing in popularity across the world. As well as private commissions, such as the decorative murals he produced for Kent House, Sert was commissioned across the world, from Vic Cathedral in Barcelona, the Waldorf Astoria Hotel and 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City.
