A LATE 19TH / EARLY 20TH CENTURY AUSTRIAN COLD-PAINTED BRONZE ELEPHANT INKWELL BY FRANZ BERGMAN

Modelled as a seated elephant rearing its head with trunk held aloft, the rider / mahout grabbing its head with an expression of surprise and holding a spear, mounted on a rectangular base of Portoro gold-veined black marble with two inkwells in the form of Ottoman-style hexagonal tables, the tops lifting to reveal two white glazed wells (likely original), the base of the elephant stamped with Bergman factory mark of a 'B' in an urn-shaped cartouche, 31cm x 34cm.

This figure of the rearing elephant with mahout is a known model by Bergman.

Estimated at £2,000 - £3,000
