A PAIR OF OTTOMAN-REVIVAL ARCHITECTURAL POTTERY WALL TILES
France, late 19th - early 20th century

Two wall tiles in the shape of cusped arabesques, filled with intertwined vegetal sprays of split palmettes, the moulded decoration in the centre raised and overglaze-painted in cobalt blue against a turquoise ground, mounted on iron stands, 56cm x 30cm.

Ottoman-revival architectural tiles were very popular at the turn of the century in France, where the Samson manufacture was by far the leader of this new, rising market. These appliqued pottery wall tiles were probably commissioned to be fitted in a Parisian Turkish-style bath.
