Heywood Hardy, born in Sussex, was the youngest of 10 siblings. He came from a family of artists, including his father, James Hardy Senior, his older brothers James Junior and David, his sister Ada and two of his cousins, Frederick, and George Hardy.

Igniting his own artist career, Hardy had two of his landscapes accepted for exhibition at The Royal Academy in 1864. Alongside his responsibilities, Hardy is known to have spent much of his spare time studying artworks in the Louvre, after moving to Paris to study at the École des Beaux-Arts.

Hardy was both a founder member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers, and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, as well as a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and an Associate of the Royal Watercolour Society.

As captured in the present example, horses and equestrian portraits were a common subject of Hardy’s. Notable equestrian works of his include three portraits of Grand National horses commissioned by their owners.
