λ A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE CHINESE RHINOCEROS HORN 'IMMORTALS' RAFT' CARVING.

Qing Dynasty, 19th Century.

The raft tapering to a point with entwining branches emerging from the base and forming an arching canopy carved in deep openwork and festoon with flowering and budding plum blossom, a section in the middle open to the sky where six figures relax engaged in various activities, with the second section of branches adorned by two birds above an extended platform on which rest six further figures, wood stand carved to simulate waves, 46cm long, 13cm wide, 1.7kg. Provenance: a gift to a British missionary, McNab posted in Nagar Hills District c. 1885 and thence by descent.
