Dickinson (William Robert) Rustic Figures

Dickinson (William Robert)

Rustic Figures, lithographed title page and 23 lithograph plates, uncoloured, tissue guards, one leaf introduction, some spotting throughout, folio, full cloth with gilt title within decorative gilt frame, some cracking to spine extremities, J. Dickinson, 1842.

***A collection of lithographic plates depicting working people, both men and women, in their costumes, including rural characters, labourers and trades people. Fisher folk are well represented and we also see several individuals in Scottish dress, including shepherds. In some cases buildings and scenery are included in the backgrounds. One portrait is captioned Newhaven. The plates by William Robert Dickinson (1815-87) were published by his father from his New Bond Street shop premises and were intended as patterns for artists.

Dickinson states that these Sketches of National Costume' were made possible by 'improvements in Lithography,' enabling him 'to make drawings on the stone with the brush directly from the Models.' A scarce work, with only ten copies listed by Library Hub, because it was originally issued as a part work, completed in eighteen weekly numbers of five monthly parts. (Goldsmiths'-Kress 32948, but not in Abbey).
