The present work derives from Van Dyck’s Pietà and is most likely in preparation for a print.
Schut was primarily a painter and an etcher. He trained in Rubens's school and was considered one of his master's best pupils. Van Dyck painted his portrait and kept it in his private collection of the artists he considered most celebrated.
