PROPERTY FROM AN IMPORTANT PRIVATE EUROPEAN COLLECTOR
Iran and India, 18th - early 20th century

Each of rectangular shape and of different size, each panel lacquered, polychrome-painted and heightened in gold, comprising a fine pair of small lacquered panels, the centre embellished with a lobed and cusped golden cartouche filled with a tuft of grass and three white flowers, an elegant and sinuous floral scroll filling the space around against a red ground, the corners with cusped cartouches with further flower sprays, the whole composition framed within a zig-zagged fretwork band, the verso with a typical Indian gilt floral motif repeated in grid pattern, framed within rosettes band, the light brown calf spine still attached, 15cm x 9cm; three pairs of similar panels with minor variations on the typical arabesque, Chinese cloud collar and interlocking vegetal sprays motifs, the cusped cartouches filled with either calligraphy or further floral and vegetal trellis, the verso of two pairs with golden vegetal decoration on red ground, the third with purple paper-ends and old inventory stickers, the largest 33cm x 19.5cm; and a large loose panel with lobed and cusped cartouches in the centre against a gold-sprinkled red ground, framed within a band of rosette and hyacinth sprays, the verso similar on a gold-sprinkled black ground, 39.5cm x 28.5cm.
