AN OCTAGONAL ORIENTALIST MASHRABIYA-STYLE OCCASIONAL TABLE

Of octagonal shape, resting on compressed globular feet, the sides made of joined rectangular panels of openwork featuring typical mashrabiya decoration (rows of baluster-like clusters in repeating grids) inspired by the balconies and architectural screens in Egyptian architecture, the tabletop made from a large hammered octagonal brass tray inlaid in copper and silver in the typical 'Cairoware' style, with a raised octagonal stellar boss to the centre, raised lobed cavetto and everted flat rim, the metal-inlaid tray featuring typical Islamic motifs like split palmettes, auspicious calligraphic cartouches, floral bursts, knotwork bands, star patterns and geometric motifs, sealed by a later-added glass sheet, 48.5cm diam. and 68.5cm high.
