A mid - 19th century German Stobwasser lacquered papier maché snuff box circa 1840

[ΒΑΣΙΛΙΣΣΑ ΑΜΑΛΙΑ] Circular form, pull off lid. The lid painted with Amalia of Oldenburg (1818-1875) (Duchess Amalia Maria Frederica), queen consort of Greece, wife of Otto of Greece.

Diameter – 9 cm / 3.55 inches

Acted as Regent of Greece in 1850–1851, and a second time in 1861-1862 during the absence of Otto. Upon arriving in Greece as a queen in 1837, she realised that her attire ought to emulate that of her new people, and so she created a romantic folksy court dress, which became a national Greek costume still known as the Amalía dress.
