Solvyns, (Frans Balthazar) A collection of six hand-coloured etchings, Descriptive of the Manners, Costume and Dresses of the Hindoos, each dressed in a specific manner depending on their rank and gender, including a Durzee, or Taylor, an Auhheer, Kawra, or Hog-Keepers, Tauntees or Weavers, a Polye, or Fishwoman, and a B’heeshty or Waterman, from The Costume of Hindostan, London: J. Hayes for Edward Orme, 1807, text in English, by Scott or T. Vivares after Solvyns, plates 4, 6, 11, 17, 19, and 41, framed, each measuring 51 x 40.5cm.
***Frans Balthazar Solvyns or François Baltazar was a Flemish marine painter, printmaker and ethnographer. While living and working in India from 1791 to 1803, he made many drawings of the daily lives of the Indians which he later etched and published. It was based on Solvyn's earlier work containing 250 plates, The Manners, Customs and Dresses of the Hindoos, published at Calcutta in 1799. Abbey Travel 429; Colas 2766; Lipperheide Ld9: cf.
