A SMALL CHINESE BLUE AND WHITE 'BOY AND CHICKEN' JARDINIÈRE

清十九世紀 青花粉彩題詩雞缸花盆

Painted around the exterior with a figural scene depicting a boy opposite a chicken in a garden adorned with blossoms and rockery

9.9cm diameter

NOTE:

The subject of this jardinière is Jia Chang (b.713), a child prodigy that was trained from the age of thirteen to fight cockerels for the Xuanzong emperor (713-56). The boy is depicted as being alert and standing on his tiptoes, which forms the rebus 'qiao zu er dai', which means to expect something to happen soon.
