A FINE MAHOGANY CENTRE TABLE BY JOHNSTONE JUPE & CO. FROM CLUMBER PARK, SEAT OF THE 7TH DUKE OF NEWCASTLE, CIRCA 1835, of rectangular form, with gadrooned edge over four tapering hexagaonal legs, with a scrolling stretcher below, bearing an inventory label with a crowned letter N Clumber 2442 and stamped Johnstone Jupe & Co, New Bond St, London 2751, 161cm wide x 80cm wide x 83cm high
Provenance: The 7th Duke of Newcastle, Clumber House, Clumber Park, Nottinghamshire (now National Trust.) Thence by descent until sold by The Trustees of the 7th and 9th Dukes of Newcastle Will Trusts, Woolley & Wallis, Salisbury, 27 May 1998.
Notes: Johnstone Jupe & Co of New Bond Street made furniture from 1835 -1840 then subsequently became Johnstone & Jeans after 1842. The Company was best known for the design and manufacture of metamorphic furniture most notably the ‘Jupe Dining Table’.
