A George III sterling silver quart tankard, London 1783 by Thomas Chawner (this mark reg. 31st May 1783)

Of tapering cylindrical form with ribbed decoration with perpendicular incised lines to resemble coopering. The notched D section handle with a hinged disc lid raised by an open work chair back thumbpiece. The lid engraved with an impaled coat of arms above traces of a motto, all surmounted by a crest of an armed arm, embowed, couped at the shoulder, grasping a sword. The front engraved with the same crest. Gilt interior. Fully marked underneath and to lid interior.

Height – 17.8 cm / 6.95 inches

Weight – 841 grams / 27.04 ozt
