A Richard Taxiphote Stereo Viewer with Unique Early Aviation, Motoring & Cowes Week Images.

A Richard Taxiphote Stereo Viewer with a Unique Collection of Early Aviation, Motoring & Cowes Week Images. The approx 120 glass stereo sides are contained in their original Taxiphote "cassettes" which can be stored in the base of the viewer. The 3D images feature over 40 stereo views from the International Aviation Meeting held from July 11th to 16th, 1910 at Southbourne, near Bournemouth, Dorset. These historic photographs show several of the prize-winners from what was then only the fourth official air show in Britain. Sadly the event was marred by the death of Charles Rolls (of Rolls Royce fame) who, at the age of just 32, was the first recorded aviation fatality in the UK. The images include several close-ups of the men, and machines, who took part. There are also around 30 images from the huge 1910 Bournemouth Centenary Carnival, held in Meyrick Park, Bournemouth from 6th – 20th July 1910. Also over 20 images from the funeral of King Edward VII in 1910 showing the crowded London streets and the Laying-in-State in Westminster Abbey. Finally there are more than 20 slides of sailing at Cowes Week, mostly showing the racing yacht Shamrock, owned by tea magnate Sir Thomas Lipton. Sir Thomas also features in several of the aviation images and can be seen with his car in the background. Each stereo slide has been hand captioned and these can be read whilst viewing the image by turning the lever on the left-hand side of the viewer which moves a mirror into the field of vision. A printout of the captions is included.

Provenance: From the estate of a Stereoscopic Society committee member.
