A MID 19TH CENTURY FRENCH LIFE-SIZE TERRACOTTA FIGURE OF TOILETTE DE VENUS IN THE MANNER OF ALBERT-ERNEST CARRIER-BELLEUSE (FRENCH, 1824-1887) the nude figure of Venus leaning against a draped, naturalistically modelled tree stump, plaiting her long hair, on an integral oval base, numbered to the reverse '3155', unsigned, 136cm high PROVENANCE: The private collection of a British sculptor. Purchased at Sotheby's, Billingshurst, 19th May 2009. Currently on display at our South Kensington Gallery until 30 May (on view at Chiswick from 31/5 – 6/6) The pose, detailed modelling and physique of the bathing Venus are all reminiscent of the work of Carrier-Belleuse, particularly his L'Amazone Captive (Captive Amazon) which was sold at Sotheby's, London, 25 May 2016, lot 17.
