A MASSIVE CHINESE HARDSTONE ‘PEACH TREE’ JARDINIERE. With carved and stained peaches and jadeite leaves issuing from a gnarled clay trunk. 121 x 44 x 25cm. This piece takes forward on a monumental scale the 'potted landscapes' of Qing Imperial China, which were made from a diverse range of hardstone and organic materials 'for the viewing enjoyment of the Emperor and his concubines living within the halls of the palace complex' (Tributes from Guangdong to the Qing Court, Hong Kong, 1987, p. 55). In Chinese culture, peaches are a traditional symbol of longevity and happiness.
