Peter Monamy (1681-1749) known for his realistic depictions of naval battles and seascapes. He was born in London and began his artistic career as an apprentice to the painter ISAAC SAILMAKER (C.1633-1721)
Monamy's early works were mainly seascapes and coastal scenes, but he soon became known for his depictions of naval battles, which were popular. His paintings often featured detailed depictions of ships, including their rigging and sails, as well as dramatic action scenes with smoke and cannon fire as in the present scene.
