Of navette form, with reeded twin angular handles, raised upon an oval pedestal foot with gadrooned border, the removable lid of conforming shape with domed centre surmounted by a twin scroll acanthus and reeded loop handle. Each engraved to the side with quartered coat of arms between wythen supporters above the motto Garde Bien, all surmounted by an Earl’s coronet. Each fully marked to the foot and part-marked to lid bezel, alignment dots to edges. (4)

The arms are for Montgomerie quartering Eglinton, with Seton quartering Buchan as borne by the Earls of Eglinton and Winton

For Hugh Montgomerie, 12th Earl of Eglinton KT (1739 – 1819), who inherited the title of Earl upon the death of his third Cousin Archibald Montgomerie, 11th Earl of Eglinton (1726–1796). On the 15th February 1806, he was created Baron Ardrossan in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, enabling him to sit the Lords in his own right. He was made a Knight of the Thistle in 1814. He rebuilt the castle of Eglinton and constructed Ardrossan Harbour and the Paisley Canal. He was also a significant patron of Gillows where they supplied The Earl of Eglinton's state bed in 1800 for Eglinton Castle, where the total cost of this bed was £323 16s 7¼d, one of the most expensive items ever made by Gillows.

The family seat is Balhomie House, near Cargill, Perthshire. The ancestral seat was Eglinton Castle, in Kilwinning, North Ayrshire.
