A rare cased set of George III provincial sterling silver buttons, Chester circa 1780 by Richard Richardson IV (free. 1779, d. 1822)
Each of circular form with a loop attachment, each engraved with a different hunting theme scenes; of a gentleman and dog in a barn, one with a galloping stag, one with a gentleman riding a horse, one with a hound gazing , one with a pheasant, one with a hound, one with a couchant rabbit, a godwit, a galloping hare, one with a frightened stag, one with a gentleman rifle, one with a horse drinking water from a river. Each marked with lion passant and maker’s mark RR in a shaped punch. Housed in a later fitted leather case with velvet interior.
Button diameter – 3.1 cm / 1.25 inches
Case length – 16.2 cm / 6.35 inches
This makers mark is most similar but not identical to mark Ridgeway Mark 3 for Richard Richardson IV.
