A LARGE QAJAR QUR’AN PRODUCED IN THE MOURNING PERIOD OF FATH ALI SHAH QAJAR

Arabic manuscript on paper, 213 ff. plus 2 flyleaves, each folio with 16ll. of elegant black ink naskh script, the profusely illuminated pre-text bifolio indexing the suras in gold and silver chequerboard in blue and red ink around a cusped cobalt blue cartouche, each cartouche containing preparatory prayers in gold, set within broad scrolling and interlinking floral borders in gold and polychromes, the opening bifolio elaborately illuminated in gold, cobalt, and polychromes, the text in white cloudbands against a gold ground, the third bifolio also with text in cloudbands within scrolling floral borders in gold and polychromes, diacritic marks in red, sura headings in red, marginal hizb, juz, and indications of compulsory prostrations in red, catchwords, in gold, red, and blue rules, the final three folios in cloudbands, dated Thursday 1 Ramadan 1250 AH, within the period of mourning for Fath Ali Shah Qajar (died 23 October 1834), signed Abdul Rahim bin Abdullah, in a lacquer binding exhibiting a classical gol-o-bolbol design, the birds and butterflies on roses, tulips, irises and pinks on pale yellow ground within a floral border on black ground, the interiors of the binding with scrolling gold foliage on black ground around central prayers in central lobed cartouches, a Quranic verse regarding the sufficiency of God’s protection (Sura 8, aya 40), and the date Ramadan 1250, the text panel 23cm x 13cm, the folio 30cm x 20.7cm.
