A PAIR OF CHINESE CINNABAR LACQUER 'SCHOLARS' GARLIC MOUTH VASES.
Qing Dynasty, 18th century.
The globular body supported on a short foot and decorated around the body of each with three scenes within a continuous rocky garden: the first three scholars playing go beneath pine branches, the second the same group crouched over a handscroll, and a third scene which differs between the two vases, one with a scholar sitting beside a boy attendant tending a stove, the other with boy and master reclining of huddled in slumber, all below an octalobed raised band on the shoulders, separating tall cylindrical neck set with a key-scroll band centered between upright and pendant lappets, the neck swelling at the top to a rim collared by ruyi heads, 12.5cm H.
