***Following the election of Pope Pius VII, Giuseppe Bartolomeo Menochio was named Papal Sacristan and Confessor to the Supreme Pontiff. When the Pope was deported to France in 1809, he stayed in Rome, refusing to take the oath of fidelity to the Emperor Napoleon, despite great pressure.
