A pair of George II provincial sterling silver salts, Newcastle circa 1740 by William Beilby and Jonathan Bainbridge (active 1738-41)
Each of shaped oval form with a C scroll rim quartered with scallop shells, raised upon four shell feet with four maiden mask junctions. The wells ribbed, engraved to the side with a contemporaneous crest of an issuing out of a cloud a dexter hand holding a sword in . Together with another unmarked pair, engraved the same, of nearly identical construction. The pair marked underneath lacking date letter. (4)
Length – 11.3 cm / 4.45 inches
Weight – 589 grams / 19.23 ozt
The crest is probably for Peters, Scotland (motto: Dieu pour non)
