Tempera on canvas, seated cross-legged, draped in a long cloak, with a vajra in his right hand, the left holding a kapala and supporting a khatvanga, a club representing dominance over earthly temptations and the union of wisdom and compassion, his figure surrounded by a double aureola and images of his consorts, meditation deities and teachers, framed, 62 x 41.5cm.
Provenance: Property from a Private English Collection, predominantly assembled in the 1970s and 1980s.

Padmasambhava, the 'Lotus-Born', also known as Guru Rinpoche as well as a manifestation of Buddha Amitabha was an Indian tantric Buddhist master who introduced Buddhism to Tibet in the 8th century, he is also the founder of the Nyingma school, the oldest of the four major traditions of Tibetan Buddhism.
