Smethen was born in Yorkshire and began his artistic career as an architect apprentice to Edward James Willson (1787/8-1854). He began studying at the Royal Academy in 1843, and by 1851 he was teaching at the Wesleyan Normal College in Westminster, and was the first Drawing Master for what would later become Westminster College.
